Victoria University Press is a major scholarly publisher specialising in New Zealand history and public affairs. The Press is also a leading publisher of fiction and poetry. Founded in the 1970s, Victoria University Press now has a backlist of over 200 books in print, and on average issues twenty five new titles each year.

Te Papa Press is the publishing imprint of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Founded in 1997, Te Papa Press publishes a wide range of catalogues, museum books and scholarly research titles based on collections and exhibitions, as well as richly illustrated contemporary and historical art books and award-winning popular books that represent New Zealand’s unique national identity. Te Papa Press books are beautiful objects, valuable reference tools and engaging narratives of New Zealand.

Taramea Publishing is an independent publishing company. It focuses on stories about Aotearoa and the Pacific, be they educational, historical, fictional, non-fictional or for children. Taramea encourages and nurtures New Zealand writers. Its children’s stories are available in Māori and English.

Steele Roberts Publishing is a small, independent company focusing on quality literature and non-fiction. Its list includes art, business, Māori, self-help, current affairs and children’s books. Steele Roberts has been publishing since 1996.

A division of Pearson, Penguin Group (NZ) produces about 80–100 new books a year under the Penguin, Viking, Raupo and Puffin imprints. These cover a very wide subject range, from literary fiction, history and biography to lifestyle, cookery and children’s books.

Pearson is the local subsidiary of Pearson Education, the largest educa­tional publisher in the world. Pearson publishes 100–120 new titles each year, all designed for the New Zealand and export educational markets. Pearson is also active in publishing in te reo Māori. Pearson Education is the agent for WW Norton.

Established in 2000, Oratia Media is an independent publisher and consultancy firm. Under its Libro International imprint, it publishes a select list in history, Māori topics, business, non-fiction, children’s and educational books. Oratia Media works with associates in New Zealand and inter­nationally to provide full publishing, packaging and writing services to other publishers and organisations, as well as export marketing and representation. It is also active in the ebook and digital publishing spheres.

New Holland Publishers’ local publishing programme has grown dramatically over the past decade. It now boasts more than 200 quality non-fiction titles across a wide range of genres, including travel, natural history, outdoor pursuits, food, wine, gardening, art, gift, humour, reference, history, environmental issues and, most recently, children’s books. The company also imports books of a similar nature from its associate companies in London, Sydney and Cape Town, as well as from agency principals.

In 2007 Learning Media Ltd celebrated 100 years of publishing the School Journal, but its range is much wider than this iconic publication. Literacy is its special area of expertise, in both professional development and educational publishing around the world. In New Zealand, its expertise also encompasses maths, science and the curriculum, and it is a major publisher of te reo Māori resources and publishes in five Pasifika languages. Hundreds of titles are published each year in a range of languages and media for use in New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific, the UK, the US and Asia.

Huia is an independent publisher with a focus on supporting Māori and Pacific writers, describing the diversity of Māori experiences and perspectives, and promoting the Māori language. Huia publishes fiction and non-fiction for adults and children, as well as educational resources in the Māori language.
