Cape Catley Ltd is a small, independent publishing house established by Christine Cole Catley in the Marlborough Sounds in 1973 and relocated to Devonport in 2000. The publisher’s interests include New Zealand fiction, children’s books, social justice, feminism, politics, local history, biography and autobiography, health, gardening and yachting.

Steele Roberts Publishing is a small, independent company focusing on quality literature and non-fiction. Its list includes art, business, Māori, self-help, current affairs and children’s books. Steele Roberts has been publishing since 1996.

Skylight, established in 1998, is a national not-for-profit charitable trust working to support children, young people and their families/whānau through tough times of change, loss, trauma and grief – whatever the cause. It has published 16 specialist support resources since 2001; three or four resources annually. Skylight seeks to make available quality books on difficult life issues, where no support currently exists in New Zealand publications At times, when a publication’s content has particular relevance, Skylight also partners with other key organisations to develop new titles.

The New Zealand division of Random House Inc, Random House (NZ) Ltd publishes under the Vintage, Black Swan, Godwit, Arrow and Random House imprints. Genres include fiction, natural history, cooking, art, design, architecture, gardening, poetry, children’s, biography, business and general New Zealand non-fiction. Random House distributes all Random House and Transworld imprints, as well as books published by Victoria University Press, Longacre Press, New Holland Publishers, Huia Publishers, Te Papa Press, Gecko Press and Hardie Grant. The company’s collegial relationship with Random House Australia allows for the distribution of many of its titles in the Australian market.
 

A division of Pearson, Penguin Group (NZ) produces about 80–100 new books a year under the Penguin, Viking, Raupo and Puffin imprints. These cover a very wide subject range, from literary fiction, history and biography to lifestyle, cookery and children’s books.

Established in 2000, Oratia Media is an independent publisher and consultancy firm. Under its Libro International imprint, it publishes a select list in history, Māori topics, business, non-fiction, children’s and educational books. Oratia Media works with associates in New Zealand and inter­nationally to provide full publishing, packaging and writing services to other publishers and organisations, as well as export marketing and representation. It is also active in the ebook and digital publishing spheres.

A division of a multinational book publisher and distributor, HarperCollins Publishers (NZ) Ltd also generates its own exciting and successful New Zealand publishing programme. In addition to handling HarperCollins’ internationally published titles, this large, well-established company represents a number of other local and overseas publishers.

Exisle Publishing is an independent publisher of non-fiction, covering a broad range of subject areas including self-help, sports, equestrian, maritime, biography, popular history and photography. Exisle publishes from offices in Australia and New Zealand and sells co-editions and translations around the world. 

An independent, family-owned company, David Bateman Ltd is one of the largest indigenous trade book publishers in New Zealand. The company publishes a wide range of general trade books for the domestic market, issuing 30–40 new titles a year and keeping around 300 titles in print. In addition, David Bateman Ltd has originated several hundred international co-editions for publishers in the US, the UK, Canada, South Africa, South America, Japan, India, Europe and Australia. The company also distributes titles for a number of leading publishers in the US, the UK and Australia, and buys co-editions and rights for the New Zealand market.
