The Publishers Association of New Zealand/Te Rau o Tākupu (PANZ) represents trade, educational, scholarly and digital publishers across Aotearoa New Zealand. PANZ is focused on assisting our members with their current business and preparing them for the future, in areas such as training and professional development, and representing publishers’ interests to government and other sectors.

Export Opportunities

PANZ places a strong emphasis on export, offering members training seminars and the opportunity to showcase their books at international book fairs. In recent years both Creative New Zealand and Education New Zealand have been supporters and funders of these initiatives.

Industry Statistics

Nielsen Book Research completed a report to PANZ on the size of the New Zealand publishing market in 2022. The New Zealand Publishing Market Size Report 2022 sets an important benchmark for measuring the value and volume of sales across the publishing industry. The report values the New Zealand book market at $292 million in 2022, with 19.9 million units sold.

We are delighted to announce that entries for the 2026 PANZ Book Design Awards are now open!

Entries close 5pm Friday 29 May 2026.

We have some exciting changes to the awards categories this year. The Best General Cover Award will replace Best Commercial Book for Adults. This change reflects the importance of the cover for non-illustrative books that are published into the trade at volume. We have also updated the Best Cookbook category to include lifestyle books. This category is now the Best Cookbook and Lifestyle Book Award. Eligible books include cookbooks, home and interior design, gardening, fashion, health and wellness.

A further award goes to the Aotearoa NZ Emerging Designer. We encourage you share these detail with your eligible in-house and freelance designers. Entry to the Emerging Designer award is free and comes with a $1,000 prize for the winner. Eligibility is based on length of time in the book design industry. The designer must have been working in the book design industry for no more than 5 years as at 31 December 2025.
